Sports bra sizes and how to measure them

Sports bras are a necessary accessory for all health conscious women. Exercises, be it high or low impact ones, tend to exert and stretch one’s body muscles. But the delicate ones, like our breast muscles tend to weaken over time. This could lead to undesirable effects like sagging and pain around the breast area. This makes the usage of the correct sports bra size all the more important.

How to measure one’s Sports Bra size

  1. Measure your band size
Be braless or wearing a non-padded bra, wrap a measuring tape snugly around your body directly under your bust. Round to the nearest whole inch and note your band size. Find your corresponding band size in the chart below.
Rib cageBand size
25″ – 27″30
27″ – 29″32
29″ – 31″34
31″ – 33″36
33″ – 35″48
35″ – 37″40
37″ – 39″42
39″ – 41″44
  1. Measure your bust size:
Wrap the measuring tape loosely around the fullest part of your bust (round at nipple level, and do not forget to keep the tape straight across your back). Round to the nearest whole inch and note your bust size.
  1. Calculate your cup size:
Bust size (step 2) – Band size (step 1) = Cup size Find your corresponding cup size in the chart below.

  1. Determine your bra size:
Let’s say your under bust is 32” and bust is 37” so according to step 3: 37”-”32” =5”.

Then your band size should be 36 (31”- 33”) according to the band size chart. And cup size should be B (5”) according to the cup size chart. So, your bra size should be 36B.

Tips for getting the perfect fit

Even after you have your measurements, finding the right sports bra can be tricky and usually requires you to try a few different sizes and brands. Here are some tips for getting the perfect fit.
Snug, not tight

A sports bra should fit tighter than a regular bra but shouldn’t restrict breathing; you should be able to fit two fingers between the straps and your shoulders.

Wrinkles are a no no

The fabric of the cup should be smooth. Wrinkles in the fabric are usually an indication that the cup is too big. Conversely, if you’re spilling out of the cup, it’s too small. Adjust and look for a bigger band size and smaller cup size to understand your fit better.

Watch out for gaps

Any underwire should lay flat against the rib case, below your breast tissue, and should not pinch or dig in.

Adjust the straps

Raise your hands up over your head. If the band rides up it’s usually a sign it’s too big, though it is possible that the straps or the back closure may need adjusting.

Move around

Before buying your bra, jump around and swing your arms – (it’s probably best to do this in the changing rooms or somewhere else other people can’t see you). If you experience pain or discomfort, then try another sports bra.

Conclusion
With the wide array of sports bras in the market, choosing the right bra for you is very important. Various brands are now ensuring that enough diversity is maintained in the sports bra sizes. These tips will help you on your quest to finding the best sports bra for you.
